Naar aanleiding van het steeds groter wordende antisemitisme in Frankrijk, heeft Israel’s President Rivlin een brief geschreven aan de Franse President Macron.
Een deel van de inhoud van de brief hebben wij hieronder overgenomen.
Dear Mr. President,
“I am writing, both personally and on behalf of the State of Israel, to express my appreciation to you for visiting the Jewish cemetery at Quatzenheim and the Holocaust memorial in Paris yesterday. The mass desecration of Jewish graves with symbols of neo-Nazism is a shocking reminder that anti-Semitism is still amongst us. Unfortunately, this was not an isolated incident. Just this week, we have seen several other serious and disturbing acts of anti-Semitism. They are an affront to the Jewish people, to the French Republic, and to all humanity.”
“Mr. President, times like these demand clear and strong leadership. As I saw when we met on my recent visit to France, your actions, as well as your words, show how seriously you take the issue of anti-Semitism. This is an important message for the people of France and its Jewish community. It gives us all belief that we can and we must fight this scourge and that, together, we will overcome hatred of all kinds”.
Ook heeft President Rivlin een telefoongesprek gevoerd met de Franse filosoof professor Alain Finkielkraut, één van de leidende intellectuelen in Frankrijk. Hij was afgelopen week slachtoffer van demonstrerende gele hesjes in Parijs, die hem hebben achtervolgd én antisemitische leuzen naar hem hebben geroepen.
Tegen Finkielkraut zei President Rivlin:
“I want to send you my full support after the wicked and hurtful attack you suffered, This is a shocking reminder that anti-Semitism and anti-Israel activity are irretrievably linked. The world must fight this relentlessly and without compromise.”
“I heard that the demonstrators told you to go back to Tel Aviv. I am sure you know that Tel Aviv is a wonderful place but be in no doubt that every Jew, and every person, has the right to choose wherever they live.”
Aan het einde van het telefoongesprek nodigde President Rivlin de Franse filosoof uit om bij zijn volgend bezoek aan Jeruzalem bij hem op bezoek te komen, een uitnodiging die Finkielkraut meteen heeft geaccepteerd.
